Our personal blue-and-gold macaw, Pteri, can say hello to water, apple and much more. These birds can live over 50 years in the wild.

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are a wonderful companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. They thrive in well-rounded families. They are easily bored and find different ways to entertain themselves when their owners don't interact with them enough. If they are not socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and may even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly defined to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They should spend at least 2 to 3 hours every day outside for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They love playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. They are not only an excellent pet, but they are also a great pet for children.

Despite their adoring appearance however, these birds can be loud and can cause a disturbance to those who live near. They can emit ear-splitting calls and screeches which could be disruptive to those who live in apartments or condos.

This species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this, DNA testing is the only method to determine sex. Once sex is established, pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. It is not an easy process, and it's essential that the pet's owner has patience and understands that this is not an undertaking to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and help to correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to cease performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists were hopeful that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to the sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative, on a plan that would eventually take her to open water. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington in which she could reside for the rest of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the actual ocean and not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that connect with their family members until death. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of updates about Lolita's health and status however, there are still questions. Akromas and others who have trained or overseen Lolita's health over time are concerned about her diet. According to the most recent update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds salmon a day, along with herring, capelin and squid.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita is being criticised for the quality of food that they feed their killer whales. The orca, who was 57 years old, was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. Although the species is endangered, she lives in a tank that some consider to be too small.

Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, however her health is declining. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and want to see her returned to the wild. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has suffered from chronic illnesses and a crippling disease that has left her in a fragile condition.

The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita's current state of health. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These show that she is ageing quickly and her health is declining.

As her captor does not have to divulge this information, it is unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to removing the whale of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean and even reunite with the orca believed to be her mother. These plans were too late to save the beloved whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
